Hello, this is Dr. Shane, and today we are going to explore which type of leader you are. We've probably all heard that there are different styles of leadership, but have you ever wondered what type of leader you are and how that impacts your team? Well, today I’m going to show you how to uncover and unleash your natural leadership style.

Let’s describe some of the key characteristics of each leadership style, and see which one you naturally identify with.

Which Leadership Style Are You?

Transformational Leader

A transformational leader paints a clear vision of the future, making team members feel their contribution is meaningful and essential. This type of leader encourages trust, risk-taking, and acceptance of differences, which fosters innovation and constructive criticism. Ultimately, they gain buy-in through team members feeling heard, while passionately rallying the team around overcoming obstacles to achieve a greater purpose.

Transactional Leader

Transactional leaders provide roadmaps to keep team members on track, rewarding key goals and milestones. They offer positive and constructive criticism to ensure adjustments are made for career success. They also keep team members aligned with the big picture, even when internal conflicts arise within departments.

Servant Leader

The servant leader cares deeply about the personal and professional growth of their team, prioritizing individual development. Transparency and vulnerability are key, creating a safe workspace where everyone feels included. This leader encourages team members to choose their own path while balancing critical targets and personal development.

Democratic Leader

A democratic leader values divergent ideas and involves the whole team in decision-making processes. They find common ground so everyone feels included, increasing buy-in and accountability, Innovation and diversity are key values--and this leader actively enlists team participation to accomplish goals.

Laissez-Faire Leader

Laissez-Faire leaders grant team members maximum freedom to choose their own paths, intervening only when costly mistakes are at risk. They offer little guidance on daily tasks, but provide sideline support when needed, never micromanaging the team.

What Are the Next Steps?

Now that you've seen these leadership styles, what's the next step? Based on the characteristics described, you should naturally identify with one or more of these styles. But remember, leadership style is not one size fits all! You should also consider your team members' personalities and ask yourself which leadership style they will best respond to.
